DISCO
Taking steps to manage diabetes.
The beat of the 1979 Sister Sledge song “We Are Family” is infectious – when the music starts, everybody wants to dance. That’s why Pitt physical therapy students chose it to kick off meetings of the Diabetes Intervention and Self-Care Opportunity (DISCO) program at the Homewood Wellness Pavilion.
The program, an interdisciplinary pilot, involves having people with Type 2 diabetes meet as a group to learn to better manage their health.
It pulls together faculty members and students from several disciplines in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and the School of Pharmacy, including psychology, physical therapy, nutrition and pharmacy.
Each week has a theme like medication, nutrition, self-management and foot care. Nutrition students demonstrate a recipe, pharmacy students provide medication education and physical therapy students can provide information on how to manage numbness, tingling or pain in the feet. All the students have the opportunity to learn from each other.

Let’s work together.
